  • North East England Senior Section Weekend: 9th to 11th July 2010 - Find out More!

Girls and young women who are enthused by their own Girlguiding experience enough to want to share this with others and consider leadership in the future are precious which is why our Young Leader Guiders are so very important.

Girlguiding Sheffield is VERY lucky to have in place in the Divisions/Districts some very experienced, committed and patient people, in this particular post. What is really good is their willingness to support each other, ask questions, introduce their doubts and worries, and consider at all times what is best for our Young Leaders.

These folk also act as a ‘bank’ i.e. they know where there are opportunities for YLs to be placed at Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Units on their patch, AND they are on the look out for girls coming up 14, who, with encouragement may well take up the opportunity of staying in Girlguiding as a YL.

It is now exactly one year since the new Senior Section Resource surprised us with the Young Leadership Qualification (YLQ): there has never been anything like it before and it’s great to be able to congratulate Jenny McCormick and Laura Hill both of Ecclesall District, South West Division, as being the first two girls in the county to complete – WELL DONE YOU!

The beauty of the YLQ is that it reflects much of what a prospective leader is asked to cover for the full Adult Leadership Qualification, so giving greater meaning and relevance to the evidence that a 14/15/16 year old is gathering whilst working within the Leadership Team of a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide Unit.

Its important to remember that ALL girls of 14+ working with our units must have completed the YL Application Form, which, when signed by the Unit Guider and Commissioner, is recorded at District/Division level either by the YL Guider, or a.n.other agreed by the local team. In this way it is easy to maintain an awareness of who is in need of First Response Training, and eventually, the CRB process.

These future leaders are all automatically part of G@SSS; they should automatically receive G@SSS news; they should be supplied with each Guide News by their Guider or Commissioner; they will be invited to all Senior Section events and opportunities ….. Woodchip, International, In4mers, Queen’s Guide, Ranger units, etc etc.

Need to know more? Just ask your commissioner who is your local YL Guider, or get in touch with Ann Evans, all details in the County Directory.

Picture of Matchmakers

Our Student initiative - newly christened Student Matchmakers - was on full display at the Girlguiding UK Annual Review at the NEC on Saturday 17 May.  Our student coordinator, Gail (on the right) put a superb display together with an interactive computer presentation, highlighting how successfully our contact with students is.

The pink heart shaped hand-outs were taken up continuously by the 600 delegates who visited the Market Place.  Our team were thrilled with the visit of the Chief Guide, who had to go away and come back later (the stall was so busy!) and Girlguiding Chief Exec mentioned the initiative in her speech.

Rosie (centre) came to Girlguiding Sheffield through one of our stands at the Sheffield University Volunteers Fair over 5 years ago, with NO Guiding experience at all and is about to take over full leadership of a local Brownie Unit. Danielle (left) is about to go on placement in Warrington but helped for a short time in a unit in Meersbrook. The group she helped re-establish is part of SSAGO (Student Scout and Guide Organisation).

The Rangers really did steel the show at Beighton Scout and Guide Gang show, in celebration of 100 years of Guiding ..... as did their Guider Beth Walters, dressed most attractively, as a lady Scouter!  But the Rainbows took centre stage!

The West Division Ranger Unit, along with Gillian Nottingham, attended the Remembrance Day service at the City Hall on the 13th November 2005.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIOR SECTION

There are Ranger units that members of the senior section can join, providing an opportunity to take part in the ‘Look Wider’ scheme or to join in other activities.

If you would like the chance to develop your leadership skills you could become a young leader in one if the other sections of Girlguiding.

For young leaders, have you thought about working on the ‘Making it Count’ scheme, or even taking your warrant?

Keen travellers could consider international opportunities through Girlguiding, and those over 18 could try applying to lead a trip abroad, or could look to ‘GOLD’, the program allowing members to complete community service overseas.

If you aren’t keen to go abroad, but like the outdoors, you may be able to do the Duke of Edinburghs Award through Girlguiding, gaining a nationally recognized award.

Or what about enrolling for the ‘Queen’s Guide Award Scheme’? You could find yourself meeting royalty if you complete the award!

If you’re about to leave Sheffield for University elsewhere, don’t panic, there are often ‘SSAGO’s – Student Scout and Guide Organisations, which you could get involved in when you move

HOW TO GET IN TOUCH
