Guide News - February 2010

If this issue of Guide News looks a bit thin on the ground, that's because we have put lots of information onto different pages because we know you will want to come back and visit the site again and again!  Check out the County Calendar, Forthcoming Events, International Opportunities, In4mers, G@SSS and Achievements

NEE Design a Rainbow Princess Outfit Competition

Many thanks for all the wonderful creations that the Rainbows sent. It was apparent from the entries that a great deal of time, effort, glue and sequins had gone into creating these outfits, and that the girls had obviously enjoyed making them.

Evelyn Freeman, from 145th Sheffield (Hallam) Rainbows is the lucky Sheffield winner of the Sheffield part of the competition. Winning a trip to York with a friend to spend the day at the Whacky Warehouse and join in a party tea with the winners from all the other counties in our region.

Second prize was won by Rebecca Priest, 176th Sheffield (St Paul’s) Rainbows

Third prize was won by Harriet Nicholls, 53rd Sheffield (Fulwood) Rainbows.

They have all received a small prize from county.

Congratulations to all the prize winners and thank you to everyone else who entered.

Thoughts after “100 Not Out”

I have had so many cards applauding the show not least of which was one from the Chief Guide saying “It was such fun!” I’m sorry if you and your unit missed it-it was a “one off” and the girls really did turn up trumps.

It was great- but only because, as always, an “army” of adults helped get the show on the road. A huge thank you to:

  • Those who did the register and fielded queries at rehearsals every Wednesday and Sunday since September.
  • Those who were the dedicated dressers for all the dancers and actors but particularly those who kept calm while organising the Brownies who had a 2 minute change from “evacuees” complete with labels and gas masks, to 1950s Brownies with ties and berets, purses and sandwiches!
  • Those who helped make up and dress hair for a large number of the 160 girls in the cast.
  • Those who sewed and ironed and pinned costumes.
  • The small group of men who volunteered to manage props, loaded and unloaded vans, pressed computer buttons and generally supported us all.
  • Those who stewarded so ably and kept it running “out front”.
  • The office support which allowed us to have tickets and programmes at minimal cost.
  • The audiences who laughed and applauded and made the girls feel ten feet tall.

For those who missed their chance this time or who are looking for another chance to star, there will be a show in 2011-look out for it!

A further thought!

It is sad, but I have heard comments such as “the girls didn’t know about the show or even the auditions”. I know it is hard to keep abreast of all the activities in this busy year but please do your best to offer as many opportunities to your girls as possible even if you can’t make it yourself. I was impressed with an email sent in my district by a student leader asking for adult help so all the brownies who want to go to Magna sleepover can do so even though only one leader from the unit is available. It is important that we give girls a chance to say “I was there” at these one off events in Centenary year.

Join Us!

If you check out the latest county directory on the second fold, under ‘County Staff’, just between International and Leadership, you will notice a new name on our lists: Rosemary Draper has very recently been appointed as ‘Join Us’ Contact, to Girlguiding Sheffield.

Join Us is a CHQ initiative, which has been in place for 10+ years (cannot discover exactly when it was introduced) which provides a single point of contact for anyone wishing to ….. Join Us!

CHQ’s system sends the details of interested parties living or working in Sheffield, through to our office. If the interest comes from a girl, then the relevant Commissioner is contacted, with the expectation that she and her team will be able to settle the recruit in a suitable unit.

Until very recently, the process was the same for adult volunteers. However, in future, Rosemary will pick up on the interest coming to our office, from adults. Her challenge is follow it through with them, discovering their area of interest and level of possible commitment. The local Commissioner, the relevant Section Adviser, and Rosemary, will then agree, with the volunteer, a plan as to where they could fit in, hopefully to the benefit of everyone concerned. Rosemary will keep in touch, to ensure things are working as hoped, or to ‘adjust’ if necessary.

OAC Update – your feedback is needed!

The OAC management committee has been looking at who uses the OAC and how we might increase occupancy levels at quiet times. We would really like your feedback to help us to achieve this.

Whether you are a regular visitor or have never been to the OAC, please do take a few moments to complete this questionnaire and return it to me.

You can post it or email it to me (details in County Directory) or leave it in the office marked for my attention.

Please note that these questions are only for guidance so if you would like to comment on anything else in relation to the OAC please do so on a separate sheet.

Thank you very much
Gillian

OAC FEEDBACK

Have you ever visited the OAC and if so was it for a camp/holiday, event, evening visit or some/all of these?

If you have not stayed for 1 or more nights why is that?

If you do stay for indoor holidays which building do you prefer and why?

What changes could we consider making to our existing buildings or site facilities to encourage more bookings?

Would you be interested in attending an open day so we can give you a guided tour and show you what is on offer?

We tend to have vacancies in bank holidays and school holidays – do you have any contacts (inside or outside guiding) who might be interested in running residential events during those times? (If yes either give details or I can send you some leaflets to distribute)

Do you have any other comments which might be helpful? If so please add these on a separate page.

Your details: these are optional but helpful
