Sheffield Guides eagerly awaited the latest Harry Potter book in a sleepover at Woodseats Library.  The witching hour started at 7pm on Friday 15th July as the Guides arrived in Hogwarts attire, to be entertained by staff from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry (AKA members of library staff).

The People’s Network was set up with exciting Harry web sites, and games, spiders and cauldrons were on hand to set the scene.  The highlight of the evening was the Harry Potter Quiz in which 5 teams vied for the coveted prize of their own copy of the Half Blood Prince.  The quiz tested the girls’ knowledge of the books and their creative skills were challenged to create an Aragog the spider mascot and a Black Bag Ball Gown for Professor McGonagall.

As you can imagine not much sleep was had that night, so the girls awoke bright and early, excitedly awaiting the owl post delivery at 8am.  All girls happily left at 8.30am clutching their Harry Potter goody bag and a library copy of The Half Blood Prince.  One Hundred other copies were whizzed to all the libraries across the city by staff who had risen at the crack of dawn to ensure requests could be met.

These girls enjoyed a weekend in Liverpool which helped them achieve the residential clause of their Baden Powell Challenge.

We had 8 young ladies from our County running in the 5k Race for Life in May 2005 and 3 who helped out as volunteers.  Congratulations to them all for finishing.  What a brave lot!!

Volunteers at the Race for Life

Race for life

Seen here, at the end of the 5K run, a team of 8 members of Girlguiding Sheffield who were (quite rightly!) all very proud of themselves, and each other for what they had achieved.  Only one team member could be described as a  runner but all made a effort to train in advance, and in fact finished the course within minutes of each other. Great weather, perfect running conditions.

The Race for Life organisers were pleased we entered a team, and another six Guiders volunteered as Marshalls.  In excess of £800 has been raised!!

Seen in the photo, from left to right: Karen Bennett - Guide Guider and District Commissioner, Ann Evans - Ranger Guider/Senior Section Adviser, Hannah Bashforth - Guide Guider, Hazel Plummer - Brownie Guider/Senior Section/Student at Sheffield University, Dianne Bollom - Guide Guider and District Commissioner, Rebecca Hoult - Ranger, and YL, Eleanor Wildbore - Ranger and YL, Ruth Stubbs - Ranger and YL.

Next year? Most definitely a 'yes' from all this year's runners. We hope to start the registration sooner, to allow more of our members to join the team before they close the doors.  One REAL difficulty for Girlguiding is that the date of the Race for Life events are not announced until well into the New Year, by which time most of us have bookings in our diaries which may well clash, so beware.  We will certainly dress more corporately, to give Girlguiding impact as we run, so are working on that.  Any suggestions?  We are loath to spend money on T-shirts etc, when we are running to raise money for a good cause.

Guider training at Netherud

On the 8th April, 37 Guiders attended a weekend at Netherud.  It was a training for Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Guiders, and also a morning training for Commissioners.
